Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Virginia “Gina” Larkin, 86, of Hamilton, NJ passed away on December 14, 2023.
Born 1937 in Pittsburgh to Robert and Alice O’Neill, Gina attended St. Rosalia elementary. After the family moved to Brooklyn, she went to St. Anselm’s school, then, with full scholarships to St. Agnes Seminary high school and St. Joseph’s college, where she majored in Chemistry at a time when few women would. She got her Masters in Religious Education at Princeton Theological Seminary.
In 1959, she married John Larkin; together they raised Barbara, Lynn and John Leo in Edison, NJ.
She ran the successful CCD program for public school students at St. Matthew’s parish. For three years, she was the parish representative on Trenton’s Bishop’s Pastoral Council. It was there, and in her everyday dealings, that her feminism and anti-paternalism were so strongly expressed. She was the Religion Department Head at St. Thomas/Bishop Ahr high school and taught Human Sexuality to the seniors. She helped construct the Sex Education program for the state of New Jersey.
For twenty years she was publisher/editor of the Edison Literary Review, a poetry journal, assisted by her husband, John, and Tony Gruenewald. She published two books of her poetry, “When the Gods Play Hide and Seek” and “From a Mind Three Fourths of a Century Old.”
Gina studied Irish Step Dancing when very young and joined Lynn to study Modern Dance and Tap Dancing with her friend, Gayle.
Gina and John travelled extensively. They enjoyed many cruises, notably two 80-day cruises, one to Asia and Australia and the other to Africa.
She is survived by her husband, John, her children, Barbara and her husband, David Flood, Lynn and her husband, David Heyns, John Leo and his partner, Sunni Tenhor, five grandchildren, Sarah, Troy, Patrick, Angel and Conor, and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Carter.
