Obituary of Virginia M Zalescik
Please share a memory of Virginia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Virginia May Zalescik (née Greco) passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday August 4th at Lawrence Rehabilitation Hospital. Born in Trenton she was a lifelong resident of both there and Hamilton, NJ.
To have met Ginny was to know her. She was always herself—unfiltered, fun, with a ribald sense of humor. Virginia was a dedicated employee, working for over 50 years at Sears and Roebuck’s Men’s Department in downtown Trenton and then at Quakerbridge Mall until she retired in 2005. Anyone who shopped there was one of her dear, and often spoken about, customers. She was the associate who asked about family or why a child was at the mall and not in school.
While working, Virginia raised four children—Virginia, Joseph, Andrew, and Charles, instilling her work ethic within each of them. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew, of 47 years. Ginny and Andy loved to go to Golden Dawn and Columbus Farmers Market together. She could be found helping him in his retirement job as a paper boy, and he could be found driving her to and from Sears. These simple acts of service were demonstrative of their love for each other and set an example for their children and grandchildren.
A true Lady, she never drove, and was chauffeured by her family and friends her entire life. She was somewhat famous among the residents and passersby of her beloved home on Whitehorse Avenue where she could be found waiting for the 609 bus, walking, and landscaping well into her 80s.
Later in life Virginia was a resident of the Homestead at Hamilton and The Landing of Hamilton. At both places she reveled in her new friendships and community activities, proudly showing off her artwork and bingo prizes. Virginia made the best pizzelles, loved the Food Network, parties, and especially holidays; dressing up and accessorizing herself and her walker for everything from Halloween to Valentine’s Day. A consummate reader of both paperback love stories and newspaper headlines, she could spark a conversation with nearly anyone, about anything—as long as it was recently published in the Trentonian or Trenton Times.
Predeceased by her parents Anna and Pasquale Greco; brothers Albert Greco, Thomas Greco; sisters Helen Meany, Willa Rhodes, Faye Greco; and daughter-in-law Mary Zalescik. Ginny is survived by her daughter Virginia, son-in-law Michael King; three sons and three daughters-in-law; Joseph and Amy Zalescik, Andrew and Jennifer Zalescik, Charles and Katie Zalescik. She will be sorely missed by her grandchildren; Lauren King and Sean Swift, Kristina and William Tinay, Julianna Zalescik, Drew Zalescik, Isabella Zalescik, Will Zalescik, and Aaron Zalescik; her great-grandchildren Kipling Swift, Everett Swift, Maelie Tinay, and Rhys Swift; sisters Connie Maira and Delores Kelley; two special nieces Lynn Rich and Susan Bell, and many nieces and nephews.
As Ginny always loved a party, please help celebrate her long and wondrous life one final time.
Visiting hours will take place Thursday, August 10th from 5pm to 8pm and Friday, August 11th from 9am to 10am at Kingston and Kemp Funeral Home, 260 White Horse Ave., Hamilton.
