Surrounded by his loving family, Joseph D. Bodnar, 91, of Bordentown, NJ was called home by the Lord on Monday, February 16, 2026.
Born in 1934 in Jessup, PA to Andrew and Anna (Staskovic) Bodnar, the family moved to Trenton, NJ in 1941. Following in the strong religious tradition set by his parents, Joseph has always been active in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, serving as an altar boy in his grade school days, then as a member of the Men’s Club, Holy Name Society, and PTA. He was a lifelong parishioner and proudly served as an usher for over 50 years. In addition, he was a member of the Greek Catholic Union, serving as president of former Lodge 33 and auditor for former Lodge 15.
Joseph was a graduate of Trenton Catholic Boys’ High School and Trenton Junior College. He started his career at NJ Department of Transportation, and after a brief departure to work for Philco, he returned to the NJDOT as a Project Traffic Engineer where he remained until his retirement in 1991. Joseph proudly stayed connected to the DOT by joining the retirees’ association (DOTRA), acting as an officer for several years and planning many of the group’s activities and outings. After retirement, Joseph stayed active as a consulting engineer with AmerCom Corporation for several years and even capitalized on his love of driving as a limousine driver with A1 Limousine.
Joseph loved the outdoors. Some of his most cherished memories were his hunting trips in PA and Colorado with his brother, brother-in-law, son and nephews. Above all, Joseph loved spending time with his family. Whether watching a Phillies game with a cold beer, enjoying a glass a red wine or scotch, he was always quick to toast with a hearty “Na Zdravi” and have a good time. His love of dance followed him throughout his life, where he was often seen cutting a rug on the dance floor at weddings and parties as soon as the music started. Joseph had many other talents-he could install, fix, rewire or repair anything his kids, grandkids or great-grandkids bought or broke. His patience was second to none and always had the right tool to do the job.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marion, who has often said she fell in love with Joseph after they danced the evening away at a New Year’s Eve party hosted by the Catholic Young Adult Club (CYAC). He is also survived by his 3 children and their spouses: Joseph A. and Marina Bodnar, Elizabeth and Paul Myatovich, and Annemarie and Glenn Callahan; grandchildren: Joseph M. and Danielle Bodnar, Ryan A. and Kelsey Bodnar, Kiera Myatovich, Dylan Myatovich and great-granddaughters Sloane Marie Bodnar and Mackenzie Grace Bodnar. Joseph is also survived by his sister, Ann Grala and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Joseph is preceded in death by his father (Andrew), his mother (Anna), brother (Andrew) and sisters (Mary and Eleanor).
